Witness Art as It Is Created at GAS Gallery

Gerard Amsellem and Mikel Frank in front of GAS Gallery and Studio
Location: GAS Gallery And Studio
411 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ
When: April 23, 2011
Time: 11:00am

Gerard Amsellem and Mikel Frank do not think art is only for the lonely — involving some solitary artist toiling in a garret.

Lately, the two local artists have discovered the joys and rewards of collaborative creation. They want to share that discovery with the Maplewood community and beyond by creating a giant abstract painting at GAS Gallery and Studio in Maplewood on April 23, 2011.

Amsellem and Frank are calling the project Passing: A Collaboration.

The pair have been painting together for several months in Frank’s studio. Rather than showing the products of their collaboration in a traditional gallery setting they have decided to share the experience with the public by making a painting on location in a single day at GAS.

The project is set to take place on April 23 beginning at 11:00 a.m. and going into the evening. Amsellem and Frank will be painting a canvas 7.5 feet high by 15 feet wide. The public is invited to stop by the gallery any time during the painting session. The artists will be hard at work and they may even invite attendees to grab a brush and be a part of this happening — and free — event.

The day will culminate in a party when all are invited to come back and see the finished product. The reception will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with free refreshments available.

Location: 625 S Livingston Ave, Livingston, NJ 07039
When: Daily

Musical Theatre Conservatory announces scholarship auditions for their Summer 2011 theatre training program, Summer Theatre Experience. Designed to immerse young performers in all aspects of training for musical theatre, the program includes exciting classes in voice, acting, theatre dance, stage combat, TV acting, audition technique and more culminating in a final show as the grand finale. Located in Livingston, the 3-week session runs from June 27th – July 15th (no class July 4th) and is open to students ages 9-17.

Musical Theatre Conservatory is under the artistic direction of Randy Kravitz Elman and Mary Brienza. Elman served for 25 years as artistic director for Performers Theatre Workshop, a performing arts school for young people. Brienza has held faculty positions at American Theatre Dance Workshop and Broadway Dance Center. She continues to work as a writer and performer and is currently teaching at New York City’s High School for the Performing Arts. Between them, the two can count Natalie Portman, Jamie Lynn Sigler (Sopranos), Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire), and Brandon Uranowitz (Baby It’s You) among their former students.

“We share a commitment to quality instruction in a positive, nurturing environment,” Brienza commented. “We also share a desire to help offset the cost by offering some scholarship opportunities.”

Elman concurred, “We both were the beneficiaries of scholarships during the course of our own training. Now we’d like to pass-on our own good fortune.

Scholarship auditions are by appointment throughout the month of May. For scheduling and details all those interested can call 973.868.6259.
