2011 South Orange and Maplewood Artists Studio Tour

The 2011 South Orange and Maplewood Artists Studio Tour will be held this year on Sunday, June 5, from 11 am to 5pm.  Artists will be opening their studios to visitors and exhibiting at the many art venues throughout the two towns, in a community-wide, day-long celebration of SOMA’s vibrant art scene.  Presented by 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and the Pierro Gallery of South Orange, this self-guided tour allows viewers to meet local artists in their workspaces, explore the many galleries around town, and have the opportunity to purchase art from more than 60 participating painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, jewelers and craftspeople, many of them new to the tour this year.   Art will also be on view at many local businesses, at 1978, the Baird Center and Pierro Gallery, and at the Maplewood Municipal Building and Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University.

2nd Annual Mayapple Festival

The public is invited to the second annual South Mountain Reservation Mayapple Festival on Saturday, May 21st.  Sponsored by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, the South Mountain Conservancy, and local businesses, the event will feature activities for the entire family throughout the day at Summit Field.  These include hikes, a nature-themed art show and exhibits, and well-known local musical performers, raffles for camping equipment, and a food consession.   In addition, an ultra-marathon and other long-distance trail races will start from the Locust Grove Picnic area. 

The festival’s events will take place as follows::

 

Location:        Essex County South Mountain Reservation
 Summit Field (Directions:  From South Orange Ave. turn onto Crest Drive for half mile, follow signs for parking.)                                              

Events:           Hikes at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

                        Art Show 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

                                   

Live Music:

Headliner: Livingston Leo, 2:30 - 4:00 p.m.

West Orange’s Dean Shot, blues combo, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Millburn’s Dean Russo, acoustic guitar, 12:30 p.m.

            Events:           Ultra-Marathons, 100K and 50K, 6:00 a.m. start

7th Annual Maplewood/South Orange/Millburn Pond Tour

The seventh edition of the ever popular Maplewood South Orange and Millburn Pond Tour. This year's tour will be held on the afternoon of June 26 and will feature many favorites from past years as well as new ponds in the two towns as well as Millburn and Short Hills. Hilltop Grasshopper: Kid’s Bike Race

Jump on the competition in the Second Annual Kid’s Fun Bike Race in the Hilltop in North Caldwell!

 The Essex County Parks Department and the Hilltop Conservancy  invite all cyclists, ages 4 - 15 to come and ride and race for prizes on a specially prepared 0.6 mile course.

 Helmets are mandatory and lots of cheering is encouraged!

 The spectator friendly course is next to the sports field parking lot on Courter Lane and Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell.  Registration opens at 7:30 AM and competition starts at 9:00 AM for the youngest competitors, K – 1st grade.  There is a $10.00 registration fee per participant which includes a bicycle technical inspection.  Any bike in good working order is eligible to race.  (Net proceeds will be donated to the Hilltop Conservancy)

Classes for boys and girls K – 1st  grade, 2nd – 3rd grade, 4th – 5th grade, 6th  – 8th grade, with prizes for top 3 class finishers.

African American Heritage Parade & Festival in Montclair

The  Montclair African American Heritage Committee’s 22nd annual event is Saturday,  June 4, 2011. The Committee is celebrating the theme of Kuumba (Creativity) this year: to do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. It means thinking of ways to make our community better. The committee's symbol this year is Nkyinkyim, symbolic of toughness and the ability to face difficulties.

BWM will participate in the parade and have a vendor table at the Festival.  The parade route will begin at Glenfield Park, proceeding west on Maple Avenue to Woodland Avenue to Willowdale Avenue to Washington Avenue to Orange Road—left around the bend of Orange Road to Cedar Avenue. The festival will take place at Nishuane Park on Cedar Avenue and High Street. Please plan to check-in at 9 a.m. Look for the REGISTRATION sign in the Glenfield Park.

Ecology And Garden Values Of Native Plants
