The Marshall School PTA is sponsoring an event to show the animated film, "Our Friend, Martin," to commemorate the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King. The Emmy-nominated film about Dr. King and the civil rights movement in America is aimed at kids from preschool to middle school. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

The film will be shown at 10:30am on January 16, 2012 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center.

The  committee organizes both educational and social events with a focus on black history and culture.

Introduction to Basic Skills for Icon Writing

On Sunday, January 22 and 29, St. George's parishioner Lancey Clough will offer a chance to learn about the art of icon writing.

Icon writing is an art grounded in meditation. Each brush stroke in an Eastern Orthodox icon is painted prayer. Traditionally the icons are created using egg tempera on a gesso board surface. Learn about the prayers, how to mix egg tempera, about the colors used and the painting skills needed to write (paint) an icon. Learn about the 22 steps that are needed to write an icon, materials and sources. If there is interest, a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will be arranged.

Classes will be taught by Lancey Clough on Sunday, January 22 and 29 from 3 p.m. until  5 p.m. at St. George's Church - RC3. There is a cost of $25 for materials.  Please RSVP to Lancey S. Clough.

and work in disparate urban and rural areas of the country.  By following these teachers as they reach different milestones in their careers, the film tells the deeper story of the teaching profession in America today.

A panel discussion to follow screening will include featured teacher Rhena Jasey.

Ben Lowell has a BS in Ornamental Horticulture and Environmental Design.  He teaches landscape gardening at the Morris County School of Technology and is a member of the Denville Beautification Committee.  His presentation will focus on those seed starting and rooting techniques that are most effective for homeowners.

The Maplewood Garden Club is a hands-on garden club, open to both men and women from Maplewood, NJ and the surrounding communities. Meetings are held September through May at the Maplewood Memorial Library (main branch) at 7:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

Join us on Monday, January 16th, 3 p.m. at Prospect Church in Maplewood for the Coalition on Race’s 11th Annual MLK Observance and Volunteer Service Fair!

Khalil Gibran Muhammad, an African American history scholar, South Orange resident, and the Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, will be the keynote speaker.

Each year at the Observance we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy in a variety of forms, including spoken affirmations and selected readings from various faith traditions; songs by the local Voices in Harmony choir; and reflections on Dr. King’s idea of the Beloved Community.  Anyone interested in singing with Voices in Harmony that day can simply come to Prospect Church at 1:30 p.m. to rehearse.  The closing event is a Volunteer Fair/Reception at 4 p.m. at the same location.  There, service and community organizations will share information and future service opportunities with residents and friends.  The ultimate goal for the weekend is to honor Dr. King while strengthening our community through service that builds bridges between races and empowers individuals.
