Writing & Selling Your Memoir with Paula Balzer

There's more to memoir writing than just telling your life story. A memoir is a well-crafted narrative about a crucial, often exceptional, time in someone's life. Literary agent and author Paula Balzer (Writing & Selling Your Memoir, Writers Digest Books) will take participants through the process of telling their most personal tales in a compelling, relatable, and readable manner.  She'll also show you how to approach the genre with love, respect, and unsentimental know-how.

Paula will talk about how to find your hook and use it to catch an agent’s or the media’s attention, how to manage your material and self-edit so that your memoir isn’t flooded with details, how to structure your story for content and marketability, and ways to find, hone and perfect your voice.  She will also confront the always anxiety producing issues of finding a market, agent and publisher for your book.  She will leave you with an armload of creative and practical ideas to get your story out of your heart, onto the page, and into the world.

Location: South Orange Performing Arts Center
1 Trenchard Pl, South Orange, NJ
When: January 27, 2012
Time: 8:00 pm

Broadway vocalist Rosena M. Hill (Come Fly Away, The Color Purple) and her husband, Grammy-winning trombonist Jason Jackson (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band), pay tribute to the legendary vocalist Sarah Vaughan.

With jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, saxophonist Don Braden, trumpeter Greg Gisbert, bassist David Wong, and drummer Neal Smith, the South Orange couple will present a unique musical experience of jazz, blues, standards, Latin, show tunes, spirituals, and original arrangements into their performances, telling the story of Sarah Vaughan through the music she recorded.

Certified jazz royalty, the late, legendary Vaughan (b. 1924 in Newark, NJ) was nicknamed “Sassy” and "The Divine One." Jazz critic Leonard Feather called her “the most important singer to emerge from the bop era.” Ella Fitzgerald called her the world’s “greatest singing talent.”

The Sounds of Sarah Vaughan keeps her musical legacy alive and introduces new generations to Vaughan’s take on tunes such classics as “Summertime,” “Send in the Clowns,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Tenderly,” “The Man I Love,” “Misty,” “Over the Rainbow” and more.
