The Adult School invites you to turn over a new leaf. On Oct. 7, it's presenting two gardening classes: Container Gardening and Landscape Design on a Budget.

Container Gardening will examine various plants and plant combinations, containers and mixes that will ensure that you have beautiful containers in the winter. The cost is $38.

Landscape Design on a Budget will help you prioritize projects so you can budget your landscaping. The class continues for 4 Thursdays. The cost is $61.

Habitat for Humanity Newark Third Annual Gala

Help support Habitat for Humanity Newark by attending its third annual Raising Roofs Gala, scheduled for Thursday Oct. 28, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Upper Montclair Country Club, 177 Hepburn Road in Clifton, NJ.

This year's Gala will honor Lucia DiNapoli Gibbons, of Wachovia, A Wells Fargo Company, as Habitat for Humanity Newark's Corporate Partners of the Year. Ten Volunteers of the Year will be honored: the Rev. Christine Leslie, Bishop Loretta P. Smith, Margaret Cook-Levy, Newark Councilwoman Mildred Crump, Theresa Marshall, Darryl Gugig, Jerry Hadley, John W. Scott, Tracey Alexander and Jeffrey J. Farrell.

The event is a major fund raiser that helps support Habitat Newark's mission of building affordable homes in partnership with low income families in Essex County, New Jersey. Tickets are $175 for a silver ticket and $250 for a gold ticket. The gold ticket includes a name listing in the program if purchased before Oct. 18. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.habitatnewark.org/gala/register.html. Purchasing tickets in advance is strongly preferable, but payments can also be made at the door in the form of cash, checks or credit cards.

For more than 20 years, Habitat Newark has built homes for hard-working, low-income families in the Central and West Wards of Newark. Habitat families supply more than 400 hours of sweat equity and receive no interest mortgages, finance by Habitat For Humanity Newark. Habitat Newark offers families a hand up to decent living conditions. More than 70 families have benefited from homes built with generous donations and by thousands of volunteers. Habitat Newark is currently branching out to new neighborhoods in Newark and to other parts of Essex County.

The evening will feature a cocktail reception, awards ceremony and a special performance by Jazz House Kids.

South Orange/Maplewood United for Academic Excellence presents the Pants on the Ground film festival, a free showing of several short films that challenge assumptions about urban youth:

"The Hobart Shakespeareans" shows how so-called "high risk" students excel when challenged with high expectations and given additional support.
 
"The Algebra Project" tells the story of how 10,000 eighth graders from challenging backgrounds succeeded in algebra, honors math and community activism.

In a similar vein,  "The Growth Mindset" introduces another paradigm on learning.
 
"Eye of the Storm" and "A Class Divided" explore the impact of labeling through teacher Jane Elliot's revealing brown eyes/blue eyes experiment.
 
"The Providence Effect," an award-winning film, follows the success stories of two K through 12 schools on Chicago's West Side.

'Strut Your Mutt' Doggie Costume Parade

The Essex County Dog Parks are celebrating Halloween with two Canine Costume Parades, a morning event at Brookdale Dog Park in Montclair and an afternoon event at South Mountain Dog Park on Crest Drive, off of South Orange Ave. in Maplewood/Millburn. The parades have become popular annual showcases of local creative talent.

Both events are free to all. Registration for participants begins at 9:15am for the 10:00am parade and at 1:15pm for the 2:00pm parade. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places in a variety of categories.

“Look Who’s Cooking” Benefit

Newark School of the Arts will host its 21st Annual "Look Who's Cooking" benefit on Sunday, Oct. 10.

The event will be held at the Bethany Baptist Church, 275 West Market Street, in Newark, from 2 to 4 p.m.

"Local men of distinction will be cooking up their special recipes for everyone in attendance," said Dara Falco, executive director of the Newark School of the Arts. "We're lucky to have so many volunteers willing to offer their hearts, their spirit and their culinary skills to help benefit the school. It will be an afternoon of food and fun for the family."

A tax-deductible contribution of $25 per adult and $10 per child under the age of 10 is requested. Proceeds will go to benefit the Newark School of the Arts, a family-oriented arts school that serves a diverse population regardless of financial need. Checks and charge cards will not be accepted at the door.

Joe's).   Kittens include the ones in the photo as well as tabbies and calicos.  Some adults with wonderful temperaments include:
Pumpkin, a beautiful orange male, large, beautiful eyes, very easygoing, likes to be held, gets along well with other cats;

Creamsicle, a young white and orange male cat, very friendly and playful, easily handled;

Deirdre, a young grey and white female cat, sweet and friendly, also good with other cats;

Smudgie, a white and black male, easily handled, adaptable and friendly.
All kittens and cats have been tested, vaccinated, and in most cases spayed or neutered.  Come by and visit with us!
