“Living with Alzheimer’s: For Caregivers – Late Stage "

The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter will present a two-part program, “Living with Alzheimer’s: For Caregivers – Late Stage "on March 8, 2012 (part 1) and March 15, 2012 (part 2) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange.

Program Description: The most current research about care in the late stage of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia indicates the benefit of including the person’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs in the treatment plan. Care becomes much more focused on how the person still can connect with others and engage with the environment. This program will offer information about providing care, communicating, developing resources and working with your care team to support the individual during the later stages of the disease.

There is no fee for attending this program, however, seating is limited.  For registration and more information, please contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 973.586.4300.

NJ Peace Action's 55th Annual Dinner featuring James "Yusuf" Yee!

New Jersey Peace Action will host its 55th anniversary dinner on Sunday, April 29th, at the Regency House, 140 Route 23 North, in North Pompton Plains, New Jersey. NJ Peace Action is working to end torture, close Guantanamo Bay Prison, and stand up for the civil liberties of all, including the Muslim community. As part of this campaign, Captain James “Yusuf” Yee will speak on “9/11 & Guantanamo: The Struggle for Justice Ten Years Later.”

 

Captain Yee served as the Muslim Chaplain for the U.S. Prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, was imprisoned and falsely accused of aiding alleged Taliban and Al-Qaeda prisoners. All charges were later dropped, and Captain Yee was fully reinstated, but tendered his resignation from the U.S. Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge.

(There is enough room for everyone to sit on the actual bima in a circle in folding chairs.) The informal service will include plenty of singing and an open Torah discussion. The marvelous Joel Friedman will return to meld Eastern religious insights and movement into the Sh'ma, Amidah, and Torah service. Children welcome, or they can attend children's weekly Shabbat services downstairs.

The Cosmic Challenge: What Can You See in the Sky?

Amateur Astronomers, Inc. presents Phil Harrington as its guest speaker tonight at 8 pm in the Roy Smith Theater at Union County College, 1033 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ 07016.  Mr. Harrington has been an amateur astronomer since 1968, and is an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College in Seldon, New York where he teaches courses in stellar and planetary astronomy.  Tonight, he will challenge you to find star clusters, nebulae, distant galaxies, and quasars.  Some of these objects are visible to the naked eye or in binoculars. Others require a backyard telescope.

After the presentation, everyone is invited to the William Miller Sperry Observatory on campus for light refreshments and the opportunity to meet the speaker. Volunteer members of AAI will also operate our two large telescopes until 10:30 pm.
