Cryan’s Restaurant on First Street in South Orange is hosting a Voter’s Forum for Village Trustee and candidate for Village President Janine Bauer on Wednesday, April 20 at Cryan’s Restaurant in South Orange from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  

The forum will give voters and supporters an opportunity learn more about Ms. Bauer’s candidacy and her goals for the Village’s future. There will also be an open Q&A session where voters can ask questions and have their specific concerns addressed. The event will include a dinner buffet with for $10 per person (children are free).

Summer Art Workshop 2011 Enrollment - Express Yourself Studios

Join Express Yourself Studios, located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood every Saturday from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm for Studio Saturdays.  Come and participate in a guided art project, a new project each week exploring a different art master and medium.  Studio Saturdays are open to children ages 5-12, $15 per child. Express Yourself Studios located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood has begun its Summer Art Workshop 2011 enrollment.  The Summer Art Workshop program is open to children ages 5-12.  Children will experiment with a variety of media in a fun and supportive environment.  Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination freely as they learn about Master Artists.  The Summer Workshop runs June 27 – August 26.

 Workshop attendees will create 10-15 art projects per week.  The projects will be inspired by a different Master Artist.   The 2011 9-week schedule includes the following artists: Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat.

Children will learn about the Artists through discussions, examples, and art-making. Projects will include painting, drawing, mixed media collage, sculpture, printmaking and paper mache.  An exhibition and reception featuring students' artwork will be held at the conclusion of each week.

 Express Yourself Studios is an art studio and art gallery dedicated to being an outlet for children and adults to express themselves creatively via classes in arts and crafts.  The Studio offers a Summer Art Camp as well as host birthday parties. 8th Annual Essex County Walk to End Hunger 2011

Saturday, May 7thwill be the 13th annual Jersey Cares Day. Jersey Cares Day is a true partnership of volunteerism and community building. Individuals and teams from across New Jersey will unite around the common goals of building, enriching, and revitalizing our communities.  The day will bring together over 2,500 volunteers working in Newark, Plainfield, Pottersville, Edison, Jersey City and Trenton. For the past twelve years, thousands of volunteers have traveled to schools, parks and community groups. There, they completed meaningful projects including:  painting murals in classrooms, planting gardens, cleaning city parks, landscaping, and organizing school libraries.

  • The Youth Orchestras of Essex County, comprised of four performing groups: the Essex County Symphony Orchestra, the Junior Symphony, Overture Strings and Chamber Ensembles are holding auditions for the 2011-2012 season.
  •  All musicians between the ages of 8-18 who are currently studying with a private teacher are invited to audition.  Full orchestra performances are held twice yearly, in December and in May.
  • Auditions must be scheduled in advance at www.yoec.org  Monday May 16 from 3:30-9 p.m. auditions will be held for ALL string instruments for all orchestras.  Brass, woodwinds and percussion and Overture Strings musicians MUST audition on May 16 unless other arrangements are made.  Auditions for Junior Symphony String players and ECSO strings players will also be offered on Monday, May 17 from 6-9 p.m. Please visit www.yoec.org for audition requirements and to schedule an audition time online.

Join the South Orange International Blues Festival (SOIBF) and the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) as they present “Blues in the Loft” on Sunday May 1, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the SOPAC Loft.

“The Blues in the Loft” will feature Michael Hill’s Blues Mob, a cutting-edge premier contemporary blues band and one of the headliners from the 2010 SOIBF.  World-renowned guitarist Dave Stryker, another featured performer from the 2010 SOIBF, will also make a special guest appearance. Additionally, featured youth and adult musicians from the 2010 SOIBF “Blues Battleground” competition will perform.

One of the main objectives of the SOIBF is to cultivate a passion of blues music among younger generations.

Second Annual CLASSIC CAR SHOW Sponsored by the Springfield Avenue Partnership, Maplewood, NJ

This ten-year signature event includes live music, kid rides and activities, demonstrations, over 125 vendors, artists, crafters and civic associations. The event is held on Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ, which is closed for the day between Indiana Street and Princeton. The festival attracts between 4000 to 5000 attendees.
It’s convenient to reach. There are no registration fees involved.
The Classic Car Show is presented as part of the Springfield Avenue MayFest, a festival of food and activities, sure to please classic car owners, their families and friends.

A $10 gas card to each of the first 40 classic car owners who arrive at the site.

Car show participants will also compete for the titles of Best Overall, Most Awesome and A Cool Ride and can win gift certificates at local restaurants.

"Timeless Trilogies" - Maplewood Glee Club Spring Concert

    The Maplewood Glee Club has scheduled its spring concert for Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m.  The group, now in its sixty-fifth year, has chosen the theme Timeless Trilogies for this concert, featuring classic songs of knighthood, renaissance, remembrance – and even Broadway.

     Appearing with the club will be the winner of this year’s John A. Plumer Memorial Scholarship, Timothy Laciano of New Providence High School.  Tim is an honor student as well as an accomplished pianist, oboist and composer.  He will perform on the piano and also will conduct a group performing of one of his own compositions.

     In addition, the doo-wop group Nostalgia will present classic songs representing the three main genres of the 1960’s – Rock & Roll, the British Invasion, and the Protest era.

     The concert will be conducted by our director, Candace Wicke, who is also president and principal conductor of the Continuo Arts Foundation in Westfield.  Pianist/composer John Conte will return as our accompanist.

     The performance will take place at the Prospect Presbyterian Church, 646 Prospect Street, Maplewood.  Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door: $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors.

DREAMCATCHER REPERTORY THEATRE, professional Theatre in Residence at the Baird Center in South Orange, presents a reading of RANDOM HORRIBLE THOUGHTS ABOUT LOVE by David Lee White, the Associate Artistic Director of Passage Theatre Company in Trenton. 

This is a collection of five short comedies that were developed independently and performed for the first time together here.  This script will be directed by Artistic Director Laura Ekstrand, and will feature DRT company members Clark Carmichael, Harry Patrick Christian, David Miceli, Jessica O’Hara-Baker and Harriett Trangucci, with special guest Angela Della Ventura.

Visitors can enjoy the spring blooms on the beautifully cultivated grounds of the Arboretum before repairing to the Wisner House for the evening play readings.  Admission is free.
