ABOUT The Solo(s) Project House
The original Latin and Greek roots of PROJECT mean "something that comes before anything else happens", and that is precisely what Solo(s) Project House is in a nutshell; evolving projects around a completed one. A space where gallery and studio are elbow to elbow, where the rigors of creation are coupled with the satisfaction of completion. The gallery is a sound stage upon which the house residents can imagine their months of creativity displayed from beginning to end. A true partner in the exhibit process, the artists are commissioned with a curatorial role that gives the visitor a 360 degree view of the creators vision. Far from an original white walled space, SPH is a home for experimental installations, avante-garde performance art and a myriad of media art. With an ever evolving pool of artists from various cultural and personal experiences SPH is a true melting pot of artistic expression.

SPH is located at 972 Broad St. in the arts district of downtown Newark, NJ. It is free and open to the public, wed - Friday from 12 - 6pm.

Location: Macculloch Hall Historical Museum
45 Macculloch Ave, Morristown, NJ
When: May 23, 2012
Time: 7:00 pm

On Wednesday May 23rd Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is pleased to welcome speaker Bernard Olsen in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibit “Gone for a Soldier:” Jerseymen in the Civil War.  Presented in collaboration with the New Jersey Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee this new exhibit brings together for the first time about two hundred objects from the Civil War from nearly thirty museums, historical societies, and private collections. Each month through June the Museum is presenting a lecture relating to the exhibit.

Mr. Olsen will share a lecture entitled “New Jersey’s Civil War Experience: Letters & Journals of Members of the 13th and 14th Volunteers” — The story of New Jersey’s role in the Civil War through the letters of six soldiers from the 14th Regiment and journal entries from the 13th Regiment on Sherman's March To The Sea.

Bernard A. Olsen has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Monmouth University. He is the author of Upon The Tented Field, about New Jersey’s role in the Civil War told through six soldiers’ letters of the 14th NJ Volunteers, and A Billy Yank Governor: The life and Times of New Jersey’s Franklin Murphy. The latter captures the true story of a young Civil War soldier who later is elected governor of New Jersey. Olsen has also lectured extensively to historical societies, college and university honor societies, libraries, and fraternal organizations. He is retired after teaching history for over thirty years at Marlboro High School in Marlboro, New Jersey. He also taught history courses at Georgian Court University and Brookdale Community College. Mr. Olsen will be available after the lecture to sell and sign “Upon the Tented Field” and “A Billy Yank Governor: The Life & Times of NJ’s Franklin Murphy.”  These books contain research that was the inspiration for this lecture.

All lectures start at 7pm with tickets available from 6:30pm and are held at the Cincinnati Masonic Lodge No. 3, 39 Maple Avenue (one block from the museum). Tickets for the lectures are Adults $8, Seniors $6, Students (over 12 years) $6. Members of the Museum will receive a $2 discount for these special programs. Memberships can be purchased at the door.  Cash or check only please. Ticket holders to the museum exhibit will receive a $2 discount to the lectures with proof of admission; lecture ticket holders may also receive a $2 discount on a museum exhibit visit. See ticket desk for details.  On the evenings of the Civil War Lecture Series the Museum will have extended exhibit hours from 1pm - 6:30pm.  “Gone for a Soldier” is on display Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons through July 1st 2012.

The New Jersey Sesquicentennial Committee, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, a volunteer organization working for increased awareness and recognition of New Jersey’s important role in the Civil war, has been recognized by the New Jersey Governor and both houses of the New Jersey legislature. Macculloch Hall Historical Museum preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W. The Colcha Project

Monday March 5th – Wednesday April 4th, 2012

Opening Reception:

Tuesday, March 6th – 5pm to 9pm

The Walsh Gallery is pleased to present “The Colcha Project,” curated by Doris Caçoilo and Jeanne Brasile.  The traveling exhibition is an ongoing project that uses crochet as a catalyst for bringing people together in an exploration of culture, family and collaboration.  In the Portuguese tradition, colcha (quilts) are crocheted, usually by a young woman’s mother.  The quilts are included in a woman’s bridal chest and may be handed down through generations.  “The Colcha Project” was developed by Caçoilo as a way to share this tradition with others, inviting guests to participate in the creation of new colcha while visiting the gallery.  Each iteration of the project results in a new quilt, which shall be on display in subsequent exhibitions.  The making of each quilt is documented, and this documentation also becomes part of “The Colcha Project.”  The communal act of crocheting provides a catalyst for bonding as each participant adds their story to the larger project and they become part of its history.

In addition to the existing colcha, a quilt in progress will be on display in the gallery and visitors will be encouraged to contribute to its making.  Each Sunday between the hours of 1pm and 5pm while “The Colcha Project” is on view in the Walsh Gallery, visitors are invited to join the curators and other members of the group to crochet, share their stories and become part of the “The Colcha Project.”  Yarn and needles will be provided for those who do not have their own and a potluck lunch will be served.
