This casual, informational session will provide prospective new members with an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the volunteering, educational, and social opportunities that the JLMN provides to its members. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees are encouraged to bring a friend.

Foreign Film Series at SOPL

The South Orange Public Library is continuing its foreign film series on Tuesday, May 29th with Los Olvidados, directed by Luis Bunuel.  The film is about a group of street kids who live a violent and crime-filled life in the slums of Mexico City. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Gerard Amsellem. 

The theme of the series is “Youth on Their Own,” and each film explores issues involving disaffected, abandoned or rebellious youth.  Each screening will be followed by a discussion led by a film expert.

The final   film in the series is City of God, to be shown on June 26 at 7 pm.

Mothers & More Presents: Kidstock!

The South Orange Maplewood Chapter of Mothers & More is excited to present, for the first time ever, Kidstock!

Join us on Saturday June 2, 2012 from 1-3 pm at the Clinton Elementary School for live music and dancing. Music will feature Sister Sing Sister String and StingRay of StarFish, and other local musicians and acts. A student dance troupe from Lydia Johnson Dance will also be performing. There will be a bounce house and face painting! We will also have popcorn and cotton candy, as well as drinks. A few local businesses such as Artistic Laminations, Other Mothers, and Macaroni Kids will have tables. Watchung Pediatrics is also doing an informational table on sun safety.

The first fifty grown ups will receive a Mothers & More tote bag.

We're hoping to enable members to meet each other and for the community to get to know more about Mothers & More. Plus, we want everyone to have fun and provide a family friendly event. 

Admission will be $5 per child; adults are free. This event is open to the public.

Nominations Being Accepted for 2012 Entrepreneur/Leadership Symposium - Platinum Minds

In a press release Platinum Minds will host the Spring 2012 Entrepreneur/Leadership Symposium for young men on Saturday, June 2, 2012, from 9:15 am to 4 pm at a private site in Elizabeth.  Participants will include qualified students from Elizabeth, Newark, and the surrounding area.


The Spring 2012 Entrepreneur/Leadership Symposium is a day-long event for young men age 11 to 17, featuring informative workshops, presentations and exhibits designed to strengthen students’ leadership, empowerment and community development skills.  Qualified students will network with business and community leaders, who will offer their success stories and challenges, with the goal of providing more young men with knowledge of their value and role in revitalizing their community.

Participation is free-of-charge, and qualified students must be nominated by a member of the student’s school administration or faculty, or local church administrators. Applicants must:

· be young men age 11-17
· live in an “environmentally challenged" neighborhoods  (pressure to join gangs or take or deal drugs, threats of physical violence to, from, or in school)
· have a B average or higher, or be strongly motivated to learn
· have no major drug or discipline problems, and no criminal record; and
· arrange transportation to and from the Elizabeth, NJ site

"There is no frigate like a book," said Emily Dickinson, "To take us Lands away." Historical novels not only transport us, but fully immerse us in different epochs and geographies, inviting us experience lives our modern sensibilities can hardly imagine.

Authors Stephanie Cowell (Claude and Camille), Susanne Dunlap (In the Shadow of the Lamp), Michelle Cameron (The Fruit of Her Hands), and Judith Lindbergh (The Thrall’s Tale) will take you from medieval Paris to Elizabethan London, from Victorian Crimea to Viking Greenland and beyond. While sharing their their insights into writing and research, they will reveal what moves them to write about such different historical milieu. They will also offer participants a chance to play with their own ideas for imaginative historical journeys. Bring a notebook, pen or laptop and be ready to take your first literary steps into past glories.

Noted civil rights leader Joan M. Garry will give a special Noon Forum in the Parish Hall after the 10:30 am service entitled "LGBT People, Bullying, and the Deeply Held Religious Belief Card” to mark the beginning of Saint George’s celebration of Gay Pride Month. Ms. Garry is former Executive Director of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and came to prominence in 1993 by successfully challenging New Jersey’s second-parent adoption law to become the first lesbian in the state to adopt her partner’s biological children.  She is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School of Communications and writes a blog for The Huffington Post.
