Broadway vocalist Rosena M. Hill (Come Fly Away, The Color Purple) and her husband, Grammy-winning trombonist Jason Jackson (Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band), pay tribute to the legendary vocalist Sarah Vaughan.
With jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut, saxophonist Don Braden, trumpeter Greg Gisbert, bassist David Wong, and drummer Neal Smith, the South Orange couple will present a unique musical experience of jazz, blues, standards, Latin, show tunes, spirituals, and original arrangements into their performances, telling the story of Sarah Vaughan through the music she recorded.
Certified jazz royalty, the late, legendary Vaughan (b. 1924 in Newark, NJ) was nicknamed “Sassy” and "The Divine One." Jazz critic Leonard Feather called her “the most important singer to emerge from the bop era.” Ella Fitzgerald called her the world’s “greatest singing talent.”
The Sounds of Sarah Vaughan keeps her musical legacy alive and introduces new generations to Vaughan’s take on tunes such classics as “Summertime,” “Send in the Clowns,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Tenderly,” “The Man I Love,” “Misty,” “Over the Rainbow” and more.
