South Orange/Maplewood United for Academic Excellence presents the Pants on the Ground film festival, a free showing of several short films that challenge assumptions about urban youth:
"The Hobart Shakespeareans" shows how so-called "high risk" students excel when challenged with high expectations and given additional support.
"The Algebra Project" tells the story of how 10,000 eighth graders from challenging backgrounds succeeded in algebra, honors math and community activism.
In a similar vein, "The Growth Mindset" introduces another paradigm on learning.
"Eye of the Storm" and "A Class Divided" explore the impact of labeling through teacher Jane Elliot's revealing brown eyes/blue eyes experiment.
"The Providence Effect," an award-winning film, follows the success stories of two K through 12 schools on Chicago's West Side.
