Former Livingston Football Captain, and Author,
John-Allen Mollenhauer, to Hold Book Signing at Sams

Livingston, NJ -- Sams Fine Men's Clothing is hosting a book signing, by local resident, John Allen Mollenhauer, who co-authored the book, The Curse of the Capable: The Hidden Challenge to a Balanced, Healthy, Higher-Achieving Life, (Fall 2009), with Harvard Psychology Instructor, Arthur P. Ciaramicoi, PhD. The event is being held on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 11 am, at 555 S. Livingston Avenue, Livingston, NJ. The public is invited to attend.

"The Curse" of the capable is a mental state where talented people mask their vulnerabilities through their capabilities. It happens when people are trying very hard in their efforts to achieve and perform to win the respect and love of other people.

Throughout the book, The Curse of the Capable, the authors ask questions like, "What happens when you try your very hardest and yet you still can't attain the healthy, balanced life you long for?" And, "What happens when you don't understand the reasons your life is not satisfying?" The book says that the answer is that -- you feel cursed! You're disappointed you're not living the life you thought all your hard work would bring, and you're feeling run down in the process.

The writers say that early in life, if we are not engaged with empathy in genuine relationships with others, we each create a novel, a fictitious story about ourselves, that we write based on what we think is being reflected back to us from those around us – as if we are looking at ourselves in a mirror. If the mirrors you are looking into are cracked or inaccurate, depressed or preoccupied… you get a distorted view of yourself as you would in a circus mirror. As a result, you create an inaccurate story about yourself and this story sets the stage for an irrational belief system. A lack of empathy creates an inaccurate, and eventually, unsupportive or negative internal story, a feeling that you're just not quite good enough. This in turn sets the stage for over-achievement – an effort to make up for what is secretly missing inside.

Through real-life examples, and a Foreword by Phil Simms, Superbowl MVP, NFL Sports Analyst, Former New York Giant, The Curse of the Capable teaches readers that when you are able to change your biased story, you can live a life with less tension and anxiety, and more joy and meaningful achievement.

"Co-Authoring this book is the realization of a life-long dream of a different kind," says John-Allen, "which was to get free of the drives to achieve for the wrong reasons. After reading Dr. Ciaramicoli's original work, I discovered that I too was living with 'the curse'. Since then, I have spent a great deal of time, both in the co-writing of the book, and in my life in general, changing the stories that drove me non-stop for so many years. Like many people, I thought I was living a relatively healthy lifestyle that was focused on fitness, nutrition and learning, but really I was actually caught up in many poor lifestyle habits – not recuperating enough, addictive albeit healthy eating, and erratic exercise habits – all because of why, and how I was achieving my goals. Writing this book was indeed cathartic for me, but it also gives me the chance to help others overcome "the curse," especially those living in my hometown, of Livingston, NJ."
