550 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ
Time: 11:45 am–12:45 pm
As part of St. George's annual celebration of Black History Month, the Absalom Jones Committee on Black History & Culture will present a forum at
11:45 on Sunday, February 10, using the bestselling book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.
The book explores how the war on drugs has become a system of racial control comparable to Jim Crow laws and slavery. Warren R. Thompson, Jr., MSW, will
join us in what is sure to be a thought-provoking and enlightening discussion. Mr. Thompson serves as Program Director of Community Corrections for Volunteers of America-Northern NJ.
Ms. Alexander's book has been described Cornel West as "an instant classic...a grand wake-up call in
the midst of a long slumber of indifference to the poor and vulnerable". A New York Times review of the book can be found here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/07/books/michelle-alexanders-new-jim-crow-raises-drug-law-debates.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&
