222 Irvington Ave, South Orange, NJ
Time: 3:00pm–5:00pm
The annual Two Towns Sing-in sponsored by South Orange/ Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is closing with a final performance this Sunday, November 14th, 3:00 pm at Congregation Beth El, 222 Irvington Avenue, South Orange. The Community Sing-In is open to the entire community.
Workshop participants, from novices to professionals, have learned a variety of vocal music, ranging from Gospel to Jewish Contemporary to chants from Central Africa to the Old American Songs collection of Aaron Copland. Top notch, local, professional performers and conductors, including concert pianist Richard C. Alston, professional music conductor Jason Asbury, ethno-musicologist Ahmondylla Best and recording artist Peri Smilow will lead and perform with the community singers. Attendees may even get an opportunity to sing along on a selection or two!
The closing event will be followed by a free reception. Last year's project coordinator, Vicki Carter, captured the intention of this event when she noted, "There is nothing better than music to bind a diverse group of people together," and bringing people of different races together to share positive experiences is the objective of both this event and the Coalition.
This event is made possible in part by funds from New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
