Press Release

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver to Address 200 Girls at Statewide ‘Celebration of Womanhood: Fabulous Me’ Conference in South Orange

Newark, NJ June 11, 2013:   New Jersey Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) will be the keynote speaker when some 200 pre-teen and teenage girls from throughout the state gather for the ‘Second Annual Celebration of Womanhood, Fabulous Me’ Conference on June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Seton Hall University in South Orange.

Oliver will speak on the theme of leadership and share her journey to success with the young women, ages 12-17, during the conference hosted by The Family Service Bureau of Newark, an affiliate of New Community Corporation. The theme for the day is “Strengthening the Leader Within Me” and the conference is expected to attract girls from Atlantic to Hudson counties.

During the second half of the conference, the young ladies will attend breakout sessions where the topics range from Self-Esteem Building and Healthy Relationship Building to Life After High School and Goal Setting.

Entertainment will include an exclusive performance by the Rutgers University Scream Theater, addressing Teen Dating Violence. The closing ceremony will feature an extraordinary interactive demonstration led by African Drummers,  designed to leave the young ladies feeling unified and empowered as they bring home a new sense of what Fabulous female leadership means to them.

Funded by the New Jersey Governor’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Committee  and administered by the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, this year’s conference is co-sponsored by Seton Hall University’s Marriage & Family Therapy Program.
