The Religion of Bebop: A Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie

Featuring Bassist John Lee.   Mr. Lee will be accompanied by Trumpeter Bruce Harris and Guitarist Yotam Silberstein

Dizzy Gillespie often compared music to religion. “It doesn’t reveal all of itself at one time,” he said, explaining the development of bebop in the early 1940s. “We had no way of knowing that the time was right. There was no assurance about anything. The one thing we did know is that it was time to make a change in the playing of our music.”

In this 90-minute concert, South Orange-based Bassist, John Lee, along with Trumpeter Bruce Harris and Guitarist Yotam Silberstein will play music associated with Gillespie. John Lee spent eight years with the Dizzy Gillespie quintet and big band. He also helped create the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. Trumpeter Bruce Harris studied under Gillespie’s protégé, Jon Faddis, at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. Guitarist Yotam Silberstein is a current member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars.

Maplewood/South Orange Professionals in Transition this week:

“Career Transitioning Support and Networking” – “Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors”

Monday, January 23, 2012
10 A.M.

Tony Calabrese will be introducing participants to a new opportunity in “Career Transitioning Support and Networking,” which will be coming to Maplewood beginning February 1.  Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors was started by John Fugazzie in January of 2011 in his home town of River Vale, NJ, when he was in job search.  John immediately recognized the power of conducting his job search as part of a group of fellow job searchers holding each other accountable on a weekly basis. He structured a weekly meeting which had attendees both get comfortable presenting what they were looking for next in their career, but to also be held accountable to their fellow members for the progress they had made in their search the past week.

Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors has a format which allows everyone to both share their progress and receive guidance and tips from fellow neighbors.  John himself found a job in a few months after founding the group, as did several of the participants.  However, knowing the need for how great support was for job seekers (and those going through a transition in their life like career change or retirement), John not only helped continue the group, but spread it to over a dozen libraries throughout Northern NJ.

Come on Monday to learn about the concepts of Neighbors Helping Neighbors in this interactive Maplewood/South Orange Professionals in Transition session.  We’ll also have time for open networking.  All are welcome.
