Richie Havens is one of the iconic figures of folk music. He was already a household name in folk music circles when he was asked to open the Woodstock festival in 1969. His three-plus hour set made him a legend, and his song “Freedom” (an improvisation on the spiritual “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child”) was heard around the world on the documentary movie from the festival.

His evocative voice and percussive guitar strumming still intact, he has maintained a busy schedule in the 40 years since, even finding time to make an appearance in the film “I’m Not There,” Todd Haynes’ Bob Dylan movie. Since the mid 1970s has spent time on the Northwind Undersea Institute, an oceanographic children’s museum in the Bronx that he founded. Richie Haven's Official Website

If you so much as switched on adult contemporary radio in the 1980s, it's a good bet that you can sing one of Melissa Manchester's hits of the era -- "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," "Midnight Blue," "Don't Cry Out Loud" -- without referring to the lyrics. Melissa was and remains a terrific interpreter of the modern pop song, which, for all the talk of the "rock era," has never gone away or even declined. What's less well known is that she's a superb songwriter, and she has concentrated on this aspect of her career in recent years.

The New Folk Super Trio featuring: John Gorka, Eliza Gilkyson and Lucy Kaplansky

Eliza, John and Lucy come together to form Red Horse a new collaborative project. As three of folk music's most revered songwriters they've created an album that is awash in gorgeous harmonies & signature melodies. Covering each other's songs, performing new tunes and breathing life into old classics, Red Horse is a fresh album folk fans will fall in love with.

Eliza Gilkyson (Austin, TX) is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. The Grammy-nominated artist has appeared on NPR, Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown, XM, Air America Radio and has toured with Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. In February of 2003, she was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.  The induction placed Eliza alongside an exclusive list of Austin Music Hall of Fame greats, including Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, Billy Joe Shaver, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and others. In 2006, she was recognized with 3 Austin Music Awards and 4 Folk Alliance Music Awards, one of which was for "Song of the Year" for her tune "Man of God." Eliza's meditative tune "Requiem," written as a prayer for those who lost lives in the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia, was recorded by the nationally recognized choral group Conspirare and was nominated for a Grammy. It was also featured on NPR's All Things Considered. Her most recent Red House release Beautiful World was hailed as masterpiece by All Music Guide and was called "one of the best folk albums of 2008" by the Utne Reader.

John Gorka (Stillwater, MN) is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who was raised in New Jersey and came out of New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene that produced such songwriters as Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. His award-winning songs have been recorded and performed by such notable artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Mary Black. John has recorded eleven solo albums, six on Red House Records. His latest, So Dark You See, featured the song "Ignorance & Privilege," which was highlighted as one of the top folk songs of 2009 by NPR Music. The album also includes unique musical takes on some of his favorite songs and poems, including Robert Burns' "A Fond Kiss" and Utah Phillips' "I Think of You."  It also includes "Where No Monuments Stand," his musical version of the poem "At the Un-national Monument by the Canadian Border" by Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford, which was written for the documentary on Stafford's life called Every War Has Two Losers.

Lucy Kaplansky (New York, NY) is an acclaimed singer-songwriter, as well as a former clinical psychologist, whom the New Yorker has described as "a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs." She has recorded seven albums for Red House, two of which (Ten Year Night and Every Single Day) were awarded Best Pop Album of the Year by the Association for Independent Music. In 1998 Lucy teamed up with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the supergroup Cry Cry Cry. The resulting album was an astonishing commercial and critical success, resulting in a national tour of sold-out concerts. Since then, Lucy has appeared on the CBS Morning Show, NPR's Weekend and Morning Editions, Mountain Stage, and West Coast Live, and has sung harmony on albums by Bryan Ferry, Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. Lucy's latest album, Over the Hills, received stellar reviews and was a return to her folk and country roots with luminous personal songs about love and loss and fresh covers of Johnny Cash and Ian Tyson songs.

-Andy Borowitz, The New Yorker

The Voice of Edith Piaf in the Award-winning Film "La Vie En Rose"
Cabaret, Vocals

Jil Aigrot, the singing voice of Edith Piaf in the movie, La Vie En Rose, is as passionate and magnificent in concert with her homage to Piaf as she is on film. She channels Piaf's sound and body language with natural grace, and between each song she talks to the audience in her own natural voice. In her superb program all of the great Piaf songs are not only relived but given a special magic with Aigrot's stunning voice.

Raised in the south of France, Aigrot specializes in the art of the French song. She grew up immersed in the music of Piaf, her mother's favorite. As a child who knew she would be a singer herself, she was impressed by Piaf's energy and touched by her emotionally charged lyrics. Piaf's love songs resonated with Aigrot, especially as a teenager. "This voice came out me very naturally … When I was a student at the conservatory, I was told that my voice was not lyrical enough, that I should sing French pop songs."
