Louisa May Alcott Movie and Discussion

Time: 2:30pm–5:00pm

Outspoken tomboy Jo, or free-thinking feminist and dedicated writer? Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888), author of more than 20 books, was both and more. Though she is remembered forLittle Women, which borrowed heavily from her childhood and in which she characterized herself as “Jo,” Alcott wrote lurid tales for adults, and stories just this side of nineteenth-century propriety – as well as working as a domestic, laboring as a Civil War nurse, and raising her niece.

The South Orange Public Library presents an afternoon of Louisa May Alcott, as part of Women’s History Month celebrations. The film, “The Woman Behind Little Women,” will be shown on March 27, at 2:30. A lively discussion led by Marcia Worth will follow. The Children’s Room will celebrate Alcott with crafts and a read-aloud at the same time.

Little Women and its sequels, Good Wives, Little Men and Jo’s Boys, were beloved bestsellers in their day. Those books made Alcott the J. K. Rowling of her day, in terms of fame, fortune, and vast readership that waited anxiously for her work.

However, Alcott was more than “the children’s friend,” as publicity materials described her. She had an extraordinary childhood herself, taught by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, while living in abject poverty. And she was her father’s daughter, born on transcendentalist thinker and educator Bronson’s Alcott’s birthday. His influence on her life and work – he read and corrected her journals – was such that when he died, she survived only hours more.

Louisa May Alcott, credited by writers as diverse as Gwendolen Brooks and Rowling as a major influence, is worth another look as we mark women’s history month. Alcott, who changed children’s reading forever, is not just “Jo” anymore.

These films are amazing! Unforgettable! Gorgeous! Hilarious! Ground-breaking! Silly! Thought-provoking! And best yet ... they're only about 10 minutes long. See? Perfect for kids.

The Friends of Eagle Island will hold it's founding meeting on April 2nd from 1-4 pm at Morrow Church in Maplewood. Eagle Island has been a Girl Scout Camp serving local girls for 70 years. Located on Upper Saranac Lake in NY State, it was gifted to the GS of the Oranges and Maplewood in1937 by Henry Graves, Jr. of Orange. On Oct. 11, 2010, the Girl Scout Heart of NJ Council decided to sell Eagle Island. The Friends of Eagle Island, Inc. is a recently incorporated non-profit group of campers, alumnae and supporters, who want to acquire Eagle Island and continue to run it as a premier camp for girls along with other sessions like family camp, women's weekends and work weekends. We intend to continue the legacy gift of the Graves family, to protect the National Historic Landmark Status of the original Adirondack Great Camp buildings and to conserve pristine island property. Special Meeting on Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

Location: Belleville Elks BPOE
254 Washington Ave, Belleville, NJ
When: March 23, 2011
Time: 7:00pm

The Concerned Citizens of Belleville will hold a special meeting to inform New Jersey taxpayers of the details of a 10-state cap-and-trade program known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, known as "Reggie". The discussion will be presented by Steve Lonegan, state director of Americans for Prosperity.

Lonegan will explain that while legislation passed in 2008 creating RGGI was sold as a "green" program, it actually will force energy prices to skyrocket. The $65 million already raised from ratepayers did not go to "green" initiatives, but rather was used  to balance the state budget.

The CCB invites all New Jersey residents to attend. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 7:00 p.m., at the Belleville Elks Lodge, 254 Washington Ave., Belleville, NJ.
