Protect the Environment by Properly Disposing Your Household Hazardous Waste

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. encourages Essex County residents to participate in the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Sponsored by the County of Essex and the Essex County Utilities Authority, the event will be held on Saturday, May 5th at the Essex County Fleet Maintenance Facility in Cedar Grove.

“There are some materials that should be removed from our regular waste stream because of their hazardous nature. This collection day provides our residents a place to properly and safely dispose of contaminants, protecting our precious environment for future generations,” DiVincenzo said. “Our collection days are very popular and I am so glad our residents understand the importance of recycling. I encourage everyone to participate in our  Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day,” he added.

Materials being collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day include pesticides and herbicides, paint thinners and solvents, oil-based paint, chemistry sets, barbecue propane tanks, pool chemicals, photo developing chemicals, 9-volt and NiCad batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, products that contain mercury, car batteries, home fire extinguishers, aerosol spray paint and automotive fluids.

Items not being collected include latex paint, unlabeled or unidentifiable materials, asbestos, AA, AAA, C and D household batteries, regulated medical waste or infectious waste, commercial or industrial waste, empty containers, explosives, munitions, ordinance or reactive materials.

Under DiVincenzo’s leadership, the County’s collection program has been expanded to include household hazardous waste, old computers and electronic equipment. In addition, the collection days are held in the spring and fall.

The Essex County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is for Essex County residents only.  Residents are not charged when they bring materials, but they must provide proof of residency at the site.

Commercial businesses may not drop off materials.

Short trailer for FLAT DADDY
Location: 486 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042
When: May 5, 2012
Time: 11:30 am–1:00 pm

Only 1% of Americans currently serve in the U.S. Military, and their families have borne the disproportionate burden of more than a decade at war. Many have turned to “Flat Daddies” and"Heroes on a Stick," life-sized cardboard cutouts of their husbands, wives, parents and children serving overseas, to ease the pain of repeated deployments. Using these two-dimensional surrogates as a connecting thread, the documentary film FLAT DADDY follows four such families over the course of a year to explore the lasting impact of the war on those left behind. (RT: 82 minutes)

Q&A with Directors Nara Garber and Betsy Nagler (a South Orange native) will follow the screening.

Non-traditional art forms tend to strike an age old question: "Is this Art", challenging the artist's intentions and place them in a constant state of explanation. "State of Explanation" will glorify the "out-of-the-box" initiative that each artist has taken.

ABOUT The Solo(s) Project House
The original Latin and Greek roots of PROJECT mean "something that comes before anything else happens", and that is precisely what Solo(s) Project House is in a nutshell; evolving projects around a completed one. A space where gallery and studio are elbow to elbow, where the rigors of creation are coupled with the satisfaction of completion. The gallery is a sound stage upon which the house residents can imagine their months of creativity displayed from beginning to end. A true partner in the exhibit process, the artists are commissioned with a curatorial role that gives the visitor a 360 degree view of the creators vision. Far from an original white walled space, SPH is a home for experimental installations, avante-garde performance art and a myriad of media art. With an ever evolving pool of artists from various cultural and personal experiences SPH is a true melting pot of artistic expression.

SPH is located at 972 Broad St. in the arts district of downtown Newark, NJ. It is free and open to the public, Wednesday - Friday from 12 - 6pm.

About DER FEHLER: YOU WRITE IT IN YOUR HANDS
Solo(s) Project House presents to you DER FEHLER: "You Write It In Your Hands". The exhibition will live from May 25, 2012 - July 1, 2012 and opens with a reception May 25th from 7 -11pm

Der Fehler (The Mistake) is a pseudonymous created in 2001 by a collective, a German duo graduated from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. This entity was publicly assumed in 2005. Over time it evolved into an ongoing project that maintained continuity of the artistic identity, consistent with the original concept, despite occasional changes in team membership.

The collective sees Der Fehler as a “shrewd, a rebellious, amusing and ageless character”, focusing on political and social questions, with a critical and ironical approach.

Der Fehler's work is known by its large-scale canvas prints and installations - often of a pamphleteer nature - exploring political iconography, producing illustration and graphic imagery. Most of his work is created and produced, exclusively, through the use of digital processes.

For years after his graduation from Columbia High School, speaker Steve Weintraub could not get images of the school out of his head. He wondered who had designed the building. His dogged quest for an answer led him to create an innovative web site, "James Betelle -- Where Are You? The Search for a Lost Architect." It serves as a treasure house of information about Mr. Betelle, who designed the 1927 Columbia High School, a national model, seven of the district’s distinctive elementary schools, as well as Maplewood’s finest public structure, the 1931 Municipal Building (Town Hall), which was recently certified eligible for the National Register. In his slide talk, starting at 2:00 p.m., Mr. Weintraub will tell the story of the intriguing architect who he has helped bring back into the public eye along with his memorable buildings.

1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Visitors can also see the exciting new exhibit, "After the Hickories: Roosevelt Park" and visit the Country Store for unique gifts and souvenirs.

The Durand-Hedden House is an historic house museum dedicated to telling the story of the history and development of Maplewood and the surrounding area in new and engaging ways. The House and surrounding Grasmere Park were designated a Maplewood Historic Landmark in 2006.
