The Dreyfus Affair: Anti-Semitism and the French National Character

Location: 760 Northfield Ave, West Orange, NJ 07052
When: December 4, 2011
Time: 10:00am–12:00pm

In one of history's greatest political scandals, in 1894 Alfred Dreyfus, a young French-Jewish artillery officer, was convicted of treason--and sentenced to captivity on Devil's Island, only to be pardoned, exonerated and reinstated years later. Join Abbie Gorin, former Jewish Cultural School & Society (JCSS) teacher and an attorney for Essex Newark Legal Services, for a stimulating discussion about an episode that divided France into warring camps, with the military, church and other anti-Semites pitted against defenders of democracy and civil rights. What does this "affair" tell us about modern anti-Semitism and the search for "national identity"?

Hosted by progressive Jewish writer and scholar Bennett Muraskin, this free monthly session of JCSS' adult education series is open to all.
