When: October 29, 2012
Time: 6:30 pm–8:00 pm

Join the new South Orange Village Center Alliance (formerly Main Street South Orange) on Monday, October 29, 2012 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm in the loft at SOPAC. Be among the first to glimpse our new downtown branding campaign and website, and take part in a community forum about the organization’s goals and tactics.

The Alliance’s launch meeting offers stakeholders the opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions, and see how you can be involved in the future of downtown South Orange. There will be a presentation, discussion, and, of course, snacks and drinks.

“This is an exciting time for South Orange as we embark on new plans to make our downtown core more vibrant and successful for all our stakeholders,” said Board Chair and local business owner Matt Glass. “I’m especially excited about the launch of our new branding campaign and website.”  In 2011, Executive Director Carole Anzalone-Newman secured a grant from Main Street New Jersey for branding services which included a comprehensive evaluation and months of research and development to create an identity. The deliverables include distinct identities for the Improvement District organization, in addition to the downtown itself.

“We’ve worked hard over the past few months to prepare for this launch and our ramp up to providing services and consultation to our stakeholders,” says Glass.  “I hope that our entire community, including business owners, property owners, residents and shoppers, joins us to learn more about how we can all work together to build a better South Orange.”

Ugo Giannini: Drawing D-Day an Artist’s Journey
November 8- December 20
Opening, November 8, 7-9pm
Book Signing, Reading and Curator’s Talk TBA

The Pierro Gallery of South Orange presents an exhibition that features a group of drawings made on the spot during the 1944 Normandy invasion on Omaha Beach by West Orange Artist, Ugo Giannini (1919-1993). His family discovered the series of 27 war drawings for the first time after his death, dates showing they were made beginning on D-Day through the end of the war: June 6, 1944 to May 1945. Some of the locales depicted are Vierville sur Mer, Issigny, St. Lo and Vire. Also Valkenburg, Holland as well as Germany/ ( Julich and Alsdorf). The exhibition also features Giannini’s related works made throughout his life time.

The works are done in pencil or pen in the gritty realist style he had been taught as a high school art student at the National Academy of Design shortly before the war. Later works in the exhibition were influenced by his studies with Fernand Léger in Paris under the GI Bill and his ongoing passion for the contemporary art of his time.  Yet the war drawings remain formative of a life view that became integral to the underlying essence of his art.

Giannini was among the first wave of soldiers to land shortly after H-Hour on D-Day. It was a harrowing experience that would crowd his memory all his life, though he would rarely talk about it. Giannini’s widow, Maxine Giannini has complied a book about the war drawings and letters from the artist titled, Drawing D-Day: An Artist's Journey Through War. She will be present, along with the curators, to read from the book and discuss the exhibition, date and time to be announced.

Time: 7:00 pm–10:00 pm

Wes Montgomery played one of the most unique and exciting sounds in improvisational music.

He continues to be the standard for modern jazz guitarists. It’s only natural that West Orange-based jazz guitarist Stryker would pay tribute to Montgomery, as he was one of Dave’s early influences.

Stryker is now considered a guitarist with his own voice as well. Renowned jazz critic Gary Giddins has called Dave Stryker “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”

Joining him will be organist Jared Gold and drummer McClenty Hunter.

SOMa Food Fight - Online Food Drive to benefit MEND

$

0
Location: South Orange Middle School
70 N Ridgewood Rd, South Orange, NJ
When: Daily

This year the South Orange & Maplewood middle schoolers will bring awareness while fighting hunger in their community using new age media, decreasing the carbon footprint of the traditional food drive, the burden of carrying goods to school and eliminating waste by ensuring that 100% of the goods are what our pantries need most.

Hunger is a growing problem across the country.  Approximately 1 in 7 households are “food insecure”. Children need adequate nutrition for their physical and mental health, as well as their emotional development, and participation in community. Local food pantries have severe shortages and subsequently must turn people in need away.  They need our help!

Sarah Chalk, SOMa mother moved to the district in 1997, came across You Give Goods and immediately saw the opportunity to not only provide support to those in need but to share a teachable moment.  ”Our children are using FaceBook, Instagram and Twitter to communicate with friends.  Using social media for social good is a new experience for many of our community’s youngest members,” said Chalk.

A recent post in the Maplewood Patch shared that Maplewood residents donate 4.2% of their annual income to charity and South Orange residents donate 4.5% with the state average being 3.7%, according to How America Gives.  It will be interesting to watch how these young motivated children will compare as they bring their enthusiasm and passion to the pages of Facebook and other social media platforms popular with today’s youth.

As both the CEO of YouGiveGoods and the father of three middle schoolers, I’ve had the chance to see so many middle school age kids do incredible things – particularly using technology.  It’s going to be terrific to see SOMS and MMS tackle hunger with the Food Fight,” said Pat O’Neill.

All donations collected will directly benefit MEND, an interfaith organization meeting the emergency needs of the disadvantaged of Essex County established in 1979.  In 2011, according to MEND’s site, over 69,000 needy individuals in Essex County visited the anti-hunger network.  The 18 pantries serve those struck by fire, theft, unemployment, illness and other crisis.  While assistance is provided to individual and families, MEND reports the majority of their clients are young children representing upward of 40% of the total population served.

Visit the SOMa contest page at You Give Goods and support our local youth as they fight the war on hunger.  If you Tweet, Instagram or use other social platforms, spread the word #SOMaFightsHunger.

The online food drive will run from October 8-October 25, 2012.
