On Sunday, September 16th at 4 p.m. Macculloch Hall Historical Museum will host their 15th annual Poets in the Garden event. Poet James Richardson will present his work in the museum’s historic gardens. The event promises to be a wonderful opportunity to hear this established writer share his poems in a unique setting.

James Richardson was born in 1950, graduated from Princeton in 1971 and is now Professor of English and Creative Writing at Princeton. He teaches beginning and advanced poetry workshops, Prosody, Reading Literature: Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, and Lyric Poetry.  His books include By the Numbers: Poems and Aphorisms, which was a 2010 National Book Award finalist and a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2010, Interglacial: New and Selected Poems and Aphorisms, which was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Critics Circle Award, Vectors: Aphorisms and Ten Second Essays (e.g. "All work is the avoidance of harder work" "You've never said anything as stupid as what people thought you said"), How Things Are, A Suite for Lucretians, As If, Second Guesses, Reservations and two critical studies.

Recipient of the 2011 Jackson Poetry Prize, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Robert H. Visitors to the Museum can also enjoy the current exhibit The Other Side of War: The Civil War on the Home Front.  Life on the home front was not easy for loved ones whom the soldiers left behind. Women played an important role in the Union war effort; starting the U.S. Sanitary Commission, serving as nurses, gathering goods and raising money for the soldiers all contributed to the Union victory. The exhibit features letters to loved ones back home, Lincoln memorabilia from the Museum's collection including a plate from his White House china, and a document signed by Lincoln as President and also by the Secretary of War.  The Museum will remain open until 4pm when the program begins.  Admission is Adults $8; Seniors & Students $6; Children 6 – 12 $4. Members and children under 5 are free. Entrance to the program is included with regular museum admission. Please no dogs during programs in the garden. We are pleased to offer accessible restroom facilities during garden events this summer.  In the case of inclement weather the performance will be moved indoors. The announcement will be made on the Museum’s main phone message on performance day.

Cryan’s to celebrate 30 years of Irish good times

0

Location: 24 1st St, South Orange, NJ 07079
When: August 24, 2012
Time: 4:00 pm–11:59 pm

Cryan’s Beef & Ale House in South Orange is as elemental to New Jersey as the Parkway, Guido guys and Bruce Springsteen.

This Friday, the iconic Irish bar owned by Jimmy Cryan, will celebrate 30 years of good times, Gaelic tradition, and friendships built in the bustling bar.

The party begins at 4 p.m., with a complimentary super buffet until 6 p.m., and $3 drinks all night.

Amazing Art and Wonderful Willie, the first band to perform at Cryan’s 30 years ago, will play dance music of all eras until 8 p.m.

Lots of folks named Cryan will probably bump your elbows. Jimmy is the youngest of six children born to John Cryan, the former Essex County sheriff and state assemblyman. The elder Cryan was the Irish immigrant who opened the first Cryan’s in Vailsburg back in 1960, expanding to 30 locations by the 1980s.

The South Orange location is now the last standing Cryan’s.

An average 300 people a day pass through the restaurant’s doors. Jimmy Cryan says that’s because “No matter what day of the week or time of day, you’ll inevitably see someone you know.”

If you’re among the thousands who’ve made memories at Cryan’s — and you probably are — then come out on Friday and help celebrate.

Location: 45 Macculloch Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960
When: October 14, 2012
Time: 11:00 am–5:00 pm

Carrie Fellows, Executive Director of Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, located in Morristown, New Jersey, is pleased to announce the Museum's upcoming “Historic District House Tour: Classic to Contemporary 1810 - 2012.”

Sponsored by J&S Designer Flooring, The Museum's Historic District House Tour takes place on Sunday, October 14th, 2012 between 11am - 5pm.  Eight private historic residences will be showcased.

"Many of the home owners who have graciously opened their homes for this Historic District House Tour are women and men who chose to live in and help preserve historic Morristown, New Jersey.  The Museum itself was originally a private residence.  As the Museum's executive director,  I feel the Historic District House Tour is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Museum along with other historic homes --- all within walking distance of each other and the Museum.  The funds raised will be used to support the Museum, its preservation and its programs."

Built between 1810 and 2012, the historical residences selected for the tour represent the style of assorted historical periods including Victorian, Georgian Revival, Brick Manor and Federal style. The exteriors remain true to their time period.  For film lovers, one of these houses was featured in Meryl Streep's film “One True Thing.”  The contemporary penthouse apartment showcased in the tour overlooks “The Green”, Morristown's historic town common.

Tickets are available online.  Advance tickets are $35.00 each and same day event tickets are $40.00 each.

MatchJake Bone Marrow Donor Swab Event

0
0
Jake Larkin Needs A Bone Marrow Match
Location: Cryan's Beef & Ale House
24 1st St, South Orange, NJ
When: August 24, 2012
Time: 4:00 pm–8:00 pm

Before retiring to Point Pleasant, Jim & Maureen Larkin were long-time residents of South Orange. It was in S.O. that they raised their 4 children, who attended Our Lady of Sorrows, Columbia High School & Seton Hall.

Their son Bob Larkin (CHS '79), moved to San Francisco, and is now happily married with 3 children of his own.

On February 17, 2012, Bob's son Jake Larkin -- who was only 5 1/2 years old -- was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia, a rare blood disorder in which his bone marrow stopped making new blood cells. Each year, this disorder strikes only 6-9 people per million worldwide.

His only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant, which is simple & painless. A worldwide search was done of all the bone marrow banks, but no match was found for little Jake.

So the Larkin family, as well as many of their dedicated friends, began their own search. They have been holding in-person bone marrow donor swab events to see if they can find Jake's match. All it takes is a simple cheek swab with a Q-tip to see if someone could be a potential donor. They have not yet found a match, and time is getting short.

A potential donor only needs to be between the ages of 18-60 years old, and meet the medical guidelines: www.marrow.org

Jimmy Cryan, own of Cryan's Beef & Ale House, and a long-time friend of the Larkins, has graciously offered up his establishment to the family to host an event.

It will be taking place on Friday, Aug. 24th, from 4:00pm-8:00pm: www.cryans.net

Luckily for Jake, this is also the same day Cryan's will be having their 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, so the volunteers hope to swab many potential donors, particularly those of full or partial Irish decent, like Jake.

For CRYAN'S 30th ANNIVERSARY, all drinks will be $3 from 4pm-midnight, there will be a complimentary buffet from 4-6pm, prizes & giveaways, as well as a Reunion/Celebration with the band that started it all 30 years ago.....the Amazing Art and Wonderful Willie!

Jake has generated worldwide media attention. Below are just a few links to on-air, online & newspaper articles:
