Canopy of Life

November 17,2012 at 8pm and 18, 2012 at 5pm

Located at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard in New York; 240 East 31st Street, NY,NY 10016-6303. South side of 31st St, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Midtown Manhattan.

Photographic elements will supplement the art of vocal and choral song as we take musical delight in the grandeur, the protection and comfort of trees, along with many poetic metaphors, even metaphors of faith and of human peace. New Jersey poet Joyce Kilmer's famous "Trees" will appear in three different musical guises (two of which are world premiere performances!), as will Randall Thompson's setting of the Robert Frost poem, "The Road Not Taken" and a stunning contribution by last season’s Featured Composer Ivo Antognini. Many will recognize Handel's song Where e'er you walk, and Matthias Becker gives Silcher's arrangement of Schubert's Der Lindenbaum a gentle touch of jazz. And a surprise awaits, compliments of nursery lore. Not to be missed!

GAS GALLERY AND STUDIO PRESENTS “ELUSIVE IMAGERY” ART EXHIBIT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JOE WALENTINY OF GALERIE CERULEAN AND ABSTRACT ART ONLINE

BORIS by Mikel Frank
Location: GAS Gallery And Studio
411 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ
When: September 15, 2012
Time: 6:00 pm–9:00 pm

GAS Gallery And Studio is excited to announce its collaboration with artist and curator Joe Walentiny of Galerie Cerulean/Abstract Art Online (www.abartonline.com), to bring you this group exhibit of abstract art and imagery titled ELUSIVE IMAGERY. This art exhibit is on view from September 8 – October 6, 2012, with an Artist Reception scheduled for Saturday September 15, 2012 from 6 pm – 9 pm.

ELUSIVE IMAGERY marks the first curatorial collaboration between GAS Gallery And Studio and Joe Walentiny, and will feature works by artists Mikel Frank, Iona Kleinhaut, Ravenna Taylor, Marianne Van Lent, Janet Shapiro Walentiny and Joe Walentiny.

Some of the work in this show is directly inclusive of recognizable imagery, specifically of people and/or places. At the other end of the spectrum are purely abstract paintings that do not appear to reference anything. Regardless of the inclusion of recognizable forms, or lack thereof, all of these artists are firmly rooted in the expressive language of abstract art.

While Mikel Frank and Janet Shapiro-Walentiny make use of pictures in their pieces, these serve primarily as visual components; albeit from a subjective mindset. Marianne Van Lent’s paintings strongly suggest landscapes but indirectly from a lyrical perspective. Ravenna Taylor’s work suggests personal and somewhat interior spaces, also with a poetic emphasis. Iona Kleinhaut’s etchings are perhaps the most extremely non-figurative pieces in the show but her rendering is simultaneously universal and idiosyncratic. Joe Walentiny aims to tap into the organic order and chaos found in nature with a celebration of both.

The unifying factor for all this work is that the imagery for each artist cannot be pinned down to any single interpretation but must be understood within a holistic context. Formal elements such as color, composition and texture vary from artist to artist as does subject matter and the range of expression. In all cases, the imagery is always referential, however directly or not. In the end, what breathes life into this work is the intangibility that subsequently frees up the interpretation of what this art is and means.

Since 2010, GAS Gallery And Studio has been bringing unique and diverse art and event programming to the greater New York metropolitan area, specifically the Maplewood and South Orange communities of Northeast New Jersey, just a thirty-minute trip from New York City.

The Modern Village Presents: Everybody is a Scientist—Science Literacy for the 21st Century Parent, with Dr. Donald Cotler MD, FAAP

Modern science literacy is less about what you know than about how you know it.  The essential  attributes — your child's scientific "habits of mind" and identity as a scientific thinker — cannot be taught effectively in school. Parents must be "front-line, informal science educators."  Before discussing topics such as GMO foods, nanotechnology, or neurogenetic engineering, we will lay a foundation for achieving and then teaching science literacy including:

• Why bother? What scientific truth is and how we justify relying on it.

• New concepts in cognitive science: how children learn to think; how we really decide.

• What is scientific consensus? How does it develop, how can we access it and understand it?

• What is not science, and how to tell the difference.

• How are the institutions of science properly held to account? How do we achieve "well-ordered science" that serves our individual and collective concepts of human flourishing?

The floor will be open for discussion of issues from homeopathy to Remote Mind Control.
Resources for further exploration will be provided.
