Kids v. Cancer Book Sale Bake Sale

$

Location: 38 Plymouth Ave, Maplewood, NJ 07040
When: May 21, 2011
Time: 9:00am–12:00pm

Kids v Cancer is a foundation formed in memory of Jacob Froman, who lost a very valiant fight against brain cancer a little over two years ago. Our sale this year falls right on Jacob's birthday, May 21st.

Proceeds will once again benefit Kids v Cancer (www.kidsvcancer.org), which promotes, among other amazing projects, getting increased funding put toward finding cures for childhood cancers.

We hope you might be able to contribute some children’s books your family has outgrown, or perhaps a batch of your favorite homemade goodies, to the cause. Or maybe you’d just like to come to our sale. The Kids v. Cancer Book Sale Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 9am to 12 noon, at our place: 38 Plymouth Avenue in Maplewood. If you would like to donate books (children’s only, please), you may give them to us, drop them off on our porch, or ask us to pick them up any time between now and then (the sooner the better, as we’ll organize them by age and type). Please bring baked goods by either that morning or the day before. And please come to our sale that Saturday morning. Of course, John's making lattes, too, which may be the main draw for some of us. If you do think you might be able to contribute something, please let us know so that we can have a sense of what we’ll have.

All books remaining at sale's end will be donated to the Orange Book Pantry, which provides free books to children who otherwise might not have books of their own. It, too, is a terrific organization.

Location: Burgdorff Cultural Center
10 Durand Rd, Maplewood, NJ
When: May 22, 2011
Time: 3:00pm

LUCKY ME, written by Sachi Parker and Frederick Stroppel, is preparing for a New York production in the fall of 2011 will be presented at the Burgdorff Center of The Performing Arts in Maplewood NJ on Sunday, May 22nd at 3pm as a semi-staged reading with no intermission, and will be followed by a Q & A session with Ms. Parker.

Written with playwright Frederick Stroppel, LUCKY ME is the funny-sad story of Sachi’s long odyssey of self-discovery, as she struggles to reconnect with her mother, Shirley MacLaine, and escape from her imposing shadow at the same time. It spans the Rat-Pack-Vegas-“Mad Men” world of the 60’s through the free-love consciousness-raising 70’s to the New Age self-absorption of the 80’s and 90’s, finally landing in the present wherever-we-are-now.

Bears to Host “Hank’s Yanks” for Rare Charity Game

$
0
0
Location: 450 Broad St, Newark, NJ 07102
When: May 22, 2011
Time: 1:00pm

Hank’s Yanks are a community youth baseball team sponsored by New York Yankees General Partner/ Co-Chairperson Hank Steinbrenner. The team consists of many talented youths who, for a number of reasons, were never given an opportunity to flourish. Their fieldwork turned out to be astounding. Hank’s Yanks went on to win the championship at Yaphank, LI’s “Baseball Heaven” and capture the first annual “Boss’ Cup” at Yankee Stadium. One player has already been signed to pitch for the Yankees; three more are to be drafted into the major leagues come June.

"Hank’s Yanks is a great program for underprivileged youth,” said Bears General Manager and former Yankees pitcher Mike Torrez. “With some major league talent coming out of the team, I’m sure they will put up a good fight.”

Even though the Yankees will play the New York Mets that day in the interleague Subway Series, Mr. Steinbrenner will be at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium rooting for his youth team.  Also on hand will be former Yankee players.

Bears manager and former Yankees left-fielder Tim “The Rock” Raines is most excited to take part in this special charity event. “It was an honor to play for Mr. Steinbrenner and the vision he represented,” Raines said. “I am proud to be involved in any philanthropy effort that bares the Steinbrenner name. Hank’s genuine dedication to his youth team speaks volumes of his generosity.”

"Some of my fondest memories come from wearing that Yankee uniform and playing for Mr. Steinbrenner,” said Bears pitching coach and former Yankees catcher Jim Leyritz. “I look forward to partnering with his youth team and doing my part for the Newark community."

Tickets for the charity game are $10, and can be purchased at the Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium box office. Portions of the proceeds will go towards pancreatic cancer research and New Jersey youth programs.
